The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau was founded in 1922 by six nurses at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, now the Indiana University School of Nursing, in Indianapolis, Ind. in the US. The honor society became incorporated in 1985 as Sigma Theta Tau International, Inc., a not-for-profit organization. Members reside in more than 90 countries and to date there are more than 430 chapters worldwide.
The Lambda Alpha-at-Large Chapter was established in Korea in September 1989 by the Colleges of Nursing at the following three universities: Ewha Womans University, Yonsei University, and Seoul National University.
The Lambda Alpha-at-Large Chapter sponsors two Nursing Research Conferences and two Open Forums annually with nationally and/or internationally renowned invited speakers. Opportunities for scholarly exchange and advancement of nursing education and practice are also developed through the 16 Interest Groups focused on various areas of expertise. Recent activities also sponsored by the Chapter include Publication Writing Workshops and English Conversation courses, to better prepare members to become involved in and contribute to the development of nursing at the international level.
With approximately 150 active members and 600 members in total, Lambda Alpha-at-Large has been the driving force behind the development of nursing in Korea and seeks to continue the tradition of developing and promoting nursing excellence and leadership in Korea as well as internationally
